A Destination Wedding in the Algarve: Lou & Sam at Vila Alba Resort
There are some weddings that seem to capture everything we love about destination bridal style. Effortless elegance, beautiful surroundings and a dress that feels completely at home in its setting.
Lou and Sam’s wedding at Vila Alba Resort in the Algarve was exactly that.
Set against the Portuguese coastline, their day was relaxed, elegant and beautifully understated, with incredible views, gorgeous florals and a bridal look centred around one unforgettable detail: the bow.
From Central Park to Portugal
Lou and Sam’s story took them from one beautiful destination to another.
Their engagement happened in November 2024 during a trip to New York, and Lou had absolutely no idea it was coming.
While walking through Central Park, Lou had wandered slightly ahead of Sam. When she turned around, she found him down on one knee.
“Lou, will you marry me?”
It was a wonderfully simple, private moment in the middle of one of New York’s most iconic locations.
And their celebrations afterwards were equally them. A round of Irish bars followed by pizza on the way home.
A Wedding Somewhere Close to Lou’s Heart
When it came to choosing where to marry, Portugal was always going to be special.
Lou spent her childhood holidays there and later lived in Portugal after university, so choosing the Algarve for their wedding felt incredibly personal.
Sam and Lou had also always imagined themselves having a destination wedding, and they found the perfect setting at Vila Alba Resort.
With its beautiful coastal surroundings and spectacular views, the venue already had so much character that the couple deliberately kept the rest of the styling simple.
Their vision was clear. Elegant, relaxed and effortless.
Rather than competing with the setting, they allowed Portugal to become part of the styling itself.
Finding The One on Dress Number Two
Lou’s wedding dress journey was one of those lovely reminders that finding your dress doesn't have to take twenty appointments or endless gowns.
Sometimes, you just know.
In fact, Lou found hers on the second dress she tried on.
“I instantly knew it was the one. I tried on other dresses, but I went back to it as it just felt right straight away.”
And we completely understood why.
The gown had exactly the balance Lou was looking for. Beautifully simple and elegant from the front, with an incredible statement waiting at the back.
Buttons, a dramatic train and clean, understated fabric created a timeless silhouette, but it was the oversized bow that completely transformed the dress.
It Had to Be the Bow
Of all the details on her gown, there was one that Lou fell for immediately.
The bow.
“Definitely the bow! It was the detail that first caught my eye and made the dress feel so special.”
It gave the gown that wonderful element of surprise we love so much in bridal design.
From the front, the look was refined, elegant and understated. Then Lou turned around and the dramatic bow, buttons and train created the most incredible statement.
For a wedding surrounded by the natural beauty of the Algarve, it was the perfect combination. The dress didn't need embellishment or excess detail to command attention. The silhouette did all the work.
And against the Portuguese coastline, it photographed beautifully.
Simple, Elegant Destination Styling
Lou and Sam followed the same philosophy when styling the rest of their wedding.
“The venue really did all the wowing for us!”
Rather than over styling the space, they allowed Vila Alba's architecture, coastline and views to create the backdrop for the day.
Beautiful florals by Oura Flores introduced colour and softness while keeping everything elegant and in keeping with the surroundings.
Lou also kept her own bridal beauty beautifully relaxed. She styled her own hair for the wedding and chose Jessica Lee Makeup for her makeup.
The finished look felt completely cohesive. Polished without feeling overly formal and elegant without losing the relaxed atmosphere of a destination wedding.
Lou’s Advice to Future Brides
After experiencing it all herself, Lou has one particularly important piece of advice for couples planning their wedding:
“Make the wedding about you and your husband and try not to get too caught up in what everyone else thinks you should do.”
With so many opinions surrounding weddings, it can be incredibly easy to start making decisions based on what other people expect.
But Lou's advice is simple. Come back to the two of you.
“At the end of the day, it’s your wedding and it should feel like you.”
She also recommends protecting the wedding morning and allowing yourself to really experience it.
“Have the most relaxing wedding morning possible. It’s such a special part of the day to be surrounded by your bridesmaids and family, so try to slow down and enjoy those moments.”
Because after months, sometimes years, of planning, the wedding itself passes remarkably quickly.
“The day goes by so quickly, so make sure you take it all in!”

Seeing one of our brides' dresses finally become part of their wedding day will never stop being special.
From that first appointment and the moment Lou returned to dress number two, to seeing it against the cliffs and coastline of the Algarve, this gown couldn't have suited her wedding more beautifully.
